As believers in social justice, we Unitarian-Universalists need to be mindful and work on local, national and international issues. The United Nations is our link to the world."

This month's Vigil is being held in honor of Rob Serenbetz, a beloved member of our church community who passed away earlier this summer. Sunday of Reflection and Community at Spirit of Life UU, September 18

September 18 will be a Sunday full of reflection and friendship, starting with “Reflections on General Assembly 2011”, with Spirit of Life UU members Tobi Weisbond and Sue Eckstein, who will share highlights of the annual Unitarian Universalist gathering held earlier this year in Charlotte, NC.

Children's programs and Adult Discussion begin at 10am. This Sunday also marks our Our Share the Plate collection, this month for the Mid Florida Multiple Sclerosis Society located in Maitland. Please contribute this coming Sunday. Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease, and Spirit of Life hopes you'll join us in collecting for this great organization.

"Finding the common ground of our shared humanity, at home and in our communities, in our families and among friends and strangers can be challenging sometimes, " says Willingham. "But it can also change the dynamic of our interactions and put us on the same team, working towards similar ends, instead of in opposition to one another. Love Notes, written or spoken expressions of appreciation and encouragement, can be powerful tools for finding that common ground."

Willingham, with a professional writing career spanning more than 25 years, works to create engaging, thought provoking and informative content for a variety of media, and to inspire community engagement and personal fulfillment via innovative and collaborative learning initiatives. Her first book, The Food Allergy Field Guide: A Lifestyle Manual For Families (Savory Palate, 2000), was released in its second edition in 2006. Her second book, a Florida outdoor health and wellness guide, published by University Press of Florida, is due out spring 2012. Willingham also serves on the Board of Directors of Learning is for Everyone , a nonprofit education resource organization; is the Assistant Regional Director for FIRST, a STEM learning initiative, in Central Florida; and is lead curator for TEDxYouth@TampaBay 2010 and 2011.

Guest speaker Herb Cohen is an an award winning photographic artist and an expert in the motivational field who has created a special collection of work that combines his passions for photographing nature and writing thought-provoking prose. The topic of his presentation, ThePower of Choice is designed to be encouraging, motivating, and also a call to action.

As a motivational speaker, Herb teaches that The Power of Choice is one of the most valuable tools we have as humans and that we do have the choice to determine our future. To accomplish this, he instructs his audiences in the art of Creative Imaging; the practice of using images to stimulate their individual desires which in turn, cause the action for their achievement.

Social Action Cinema: In Anita's Wake, The Irrational War on Florida's Gay Families, Wed., March 23, 7:30pm

This Wednesday, March 23, at 7:30PM, join Spirit of Life UU in a free Social Action Cinema screening of "In Anita's Wake".

The documentary was directed by Vicki Nantz and was completed in the Summer of 2010. The film looks at the history of the Adoption Ban in Florida and its current day ramifications. The film includes interviews with gay and lesbian families who want to adopt, legislative leaders, current actions working towards overturning the ban, and insights provided by staff members of both the ACLU of Florida and Equality Florida.

We may all face fears in our life, UU minister Susan Maginn tells us in her sermon, Be Not Afraid. But our religion can remind us that there is another way beyond the knee jerk reactions and hiding in the bunker. Living a religious life means continuing to turn toward that still, small voice. Come join us as we share the words from Rev. Maginn's sermon, in the search for that small voice inside us all.

UUA Issues Response to the Obama Administration's Declaration of DOMA as Unconstitutional

Delfin Bautista, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Ministries Program Coordinator for the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), has issued a statement in response to the Obama Administration's declaration of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) as unconstitutional:

In the Unitarian Universalist tradition of inclusion and respect, we have long stood by LGBT people in the fight for justice, especially around marriage equality. Today, we applaud the Obama Administration for standing with us in this fight. The Administration's denouncement of DOMA as unconstitutional and its decision to no longer defend this degrading piece of legislation is a vital and long overdue step toward justice.

Unitarian Universalist ministers have officiated at same-sex unions since the early 1970s, and in 1996, the UUA called for marriage equality for same-sex couples. We knew that the road to full equality for LGBT people would be long and difficult, but we were urged on as a matter of conscience, guided by the First Principle of our faith: To affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person. Unitarian Universalists will continue to stand on the side of love until marriage equality is the legal right of every American citizen.

The UUA is a faith community of more than 1,000 self-governing congregations that bring to the world a vision of religious freedom, tolerance, and social justice. Unitarian Universalism is a theologically diverse, non-creedal religion in which members support one another in the search for truth and meaning.

Social Action Cinema presents "Bullied", Wed. Jan. 26, 7 PM

Join us Wednesday, January 26, at 7 PM, at Spirit of Life UU, for a Social Action Cinema free screening of "Bullied," a documentary film that chronicles one student’s ordeal at the hands of anti-gay bullies and offers an inspiring message of hope to those fighting harassment today. It can become a cornerstone of anti-bullying efforts in middle and high schools.

Bullied is designed to help administrators, teachers and counselors create a safer school environment for all students, not just those who are gay and lesbian. It is also intended to help all students understand the terrible toll bullying can take on its victims, and to encourage students to stand up for their classmates who are being harassed.

Bullied has been endorsed by Charles Haynes, Senior Scholar at the First Amendment Center; Kevin Gogin, Program Coordinator, Support Services for LGBT Youth, San Francisco Unified School District; Sandra Lee Fewer, Commissioner, San Francisco Unified School District and these organizations: Alabama Safe Schools Coalition, Anti-Defamation League, Committee for Children, Encompass, Fortunate Families, GLSEN, Groundspark, Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition, National Safe Schools Coalition, NEA, New York State United Teachers, PFLAG National and Welcoming Schools/HRC.

Standing on the Side of Love is a non-partisan, public advocacy campaign that seeks to harness love’s power to stop oppression, exclusion, and discrimination against people because of their identities. It does not endorse candidates or parties, but rather takes a stand on issues and language that arise in the election season because they have far-reaching consequences for the kind of world we want to live in. On November 2nd, the campaign is urging people to Bring Love to the Polls.

It’s no coincidence that stories of young people being bullied are so prevalent. Look at the rhetoric we hear during election season. There are candidates condemning “the homosexual movement,’ calling for the revocation of citizenship for children of immigrants, and insinuating that Muslim Americans cannot be trusted to worship as they please. Now, more than ever, people need our movement to bring respect and compassion to the public square.

On Election Day, November 2nd, people across the country will stand at the polls holding Standing on the Side of Love placards, and handing out Standing on the Side of Love wallet cards.

Imagine yellow love shirts, banners and placards at polls across the country on November 2nd with a unique message that calls people to our higher values of love and inclusion.

When people ask us what the Standing on the Side of Love Campaign is—and they always do—we will tell them three things:

1. SSL is a campaign that seeks to harness love’s power to stop oppression, exclusion, and discrimination against people because of their identities.

2. Elections are becoming increasingly bitter, and far too many cynical politicians are looking for scapegoats – such as LGBT people, immigrants, and Muslims.

3. We stand on the side of love to call for an end to this scape-goating, and to ask others to aspire to respect, inclusion, and compassion.

This November 2nd, do more than just vote. Stand on the Side of Love. It can make a difference!

As a fourth-generation family farmer in Montana for almost 40 years, Lyman speaks from a background of personal experience in assessing the chemically based agricultural production methods that he calls unsustainable, and ecologically disastrous.

Howard Lyman’s journey has led him to organic agriculture, vegetarianism, exploring politics and Mad Cow Disease, through a landmark lawsuit, a best-selling book, and founding the non-profit "Voice for A Viable Future."

Helen Kerwin will share "The Creation Story of Science, " written by Rev. Steve Edington, of Nashua N.H.. Originally delivered at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashua in New Hampshire, Rev. Edington asks us to consider the "The issue behind the issue" - how do we find meaning in our lives, and how do we best live with one another, and what kinds of stories do we tell to help us answer these questions?

"...how about we think of this creation/evolution issue as the presenting one, with the bigger issue being that of Story, " he asks. "...I offer this with the idea that we human beings do not live by scientific principles and theories alone. An individual's faith can be deepened in many ways: through reflection, classroom instruction, social gatherings, and outreach programs. Through the use of small group ministry, our service will present options and encourage participation to help us as individuals understand what "angles" and perspectives have enriched our faith and suggest ways the church can aid in your journey.

In Adult Discussion, we'll consider "Spiritual Sustenance." Why do people go to church in the first place? Spirit of Life UU celebrated our annual Ingathering service this past Sunday, with a Water Communion and a formal dedication of our new Peace Chapel.

The Peace Chapel is a new indoor worship space designed to complement our outdoor pavilion, in which we can worship during milder weather. Our new Peace Chapel is bright and airy, with a lovely view of our grounds, providing a peaceful indoor space for reflection and spiritual community.

It was nice to start off our new church year in such a welcoming place, and to share stories of our summer journeys during the Water Communion.

Lifespan Religious Education (LRE) programs for youth are starting up again in just three weeks. This Sunday and next, we're holding registration for our 2010-11 LRE classes.

Lifespan Religious Education is designed to be just that – a religious education experience for all ages, addressing the individual spiritual, emotional, social and educational needs of all of our congregants.

For our youth, we provide learning experiences from a variety of curricular material provided by the Unitarian Universalist Association, social opportunities in the form of field trips, sleepovers, Family Game Nights, and other special events. All of our programs are highly interactive, providing opportunities for questions, discussions, and the sharing of ideas and insights and feelings. Our children are an integral part of Spirit of Life UU and are welcomed at all levels of church life, from our classes, to our services to our social times together like Circle Suppers and Pot Lucks, and in a variety of stewardship opportunities from helping care for our very youngest through our Jr. Nursery Attendant program, to helping with church beautification and “greening” efforts.

For our adult members, spiritual growth and learning experiences occur in the form of services, our Sunday Morning Perspectives adult discussion program, special classes and workshops, our Book Club, volunteer opportunities and our many social get-togethers. As with our youth programs, our adult programs are highly interactive, seeking and celebrating inquiry and insight from all our participants.

Religious Education classes begin at 10AM and end at 10:45 for our Primary Group, with a snack and play break before services, and at 10:50 AM for our older Youth Group. Nursery aged children may receive a short, 15 minute age appropriate lesson as time, circumstance and staffing allows. Children are welcomed and vital to our service, which starts at 11AM. Children are sung into “Third Hour” after Children’s Time together. “Third Hour” is a short activity period that can include “check-in” (catching up on weekly happenings), arts and crafts projects, movies, snacks, or a continuation of a class project.

Program Goals

The goal of all of our programs is to give congregation members of all ages a sense of religious perspective and Unitarian Universalist identity. It is our hope that this perspective will help guide members in their own understandings of their beliefs and convictions. Classes are structured as follows:

•Nursery – 0 – 4 year olds are cared for and taught in our nursery, and may remain in the nursery until service ends. A short, fifteen minute mini-class will be provided to older nursery aged children at the start of each nursery session, as time, circumstances and staffing allow.

•Primary class – 5 to 8 year olds -- This class will meet in our cottage classroom and will be learning from the UUAs Tapestry of Faith curriculum. Tobi Weisbond is the Core teacher for this class, with assistance from LRE parent volunteers.

•Junior class – 9 to 12/13 - This class, also taught in the cottage classrooms, will also be learning from the Tapestry of Faith program, with Terri Willingham as the Core teacher, with assistance from parent volunteers.

•Senior class – for 12+ -- Teenaged students will be enjoying a small group ministry experience, incorporating Tapestry of Faith and other relationship building opportunities.

Adult Discussion is provided for parents & other adult congregation members at 10AM in the Gathering Room by the Minister’s office. This is wonderful opportunity to connect with one another and share thoughts and insights about a variety of topics. Facilitators and discussion topics vary for this engaging adult time together.

Sunday Morning Perspectives Adult Discussion group
Our Sunday Morning Perspectives program provides a conversation-based social gathering for adults each Sunday morning at 10AM. A team of facilitators takes turns leading discussions on a variety of subjects ranging from examinations of current events to free-flow chats that arise spontaneously or on subjects of choice selected by group participants.

The purpose of this Adult Discussion program is to provide a space for sharing ponderings, questions and ideas in a safe and accepting environment in a way that helps us grow from one another’s experiences and insights. We’re fortunate to have a place where like minded liberal religious people can gather, and Adult Discussion provides breathing, thinking, and sharing space where we can maximize our time together in personal and meaningful ways.

This is how ethnic cleansing gets started. It comes disguised as law enforcement, as a firm hand protecting social order during chaotic times. Ethnic cleansing is founded upon fear. It requires turning an ethnic or racial group into "the other." "They" are taking over. "They" are different and will destroy our way of life. The process ends, always, in violence. Below is a brief portrait of the early stages of ethnic cleansing in Arizona. And, make no mistake, we are all Arizona.

On July 29, I engaged in civil disobedience in Phoenix as part of the Day of Non-Compliance protest against SB 1070, Arizona's harsh anti-immigrant law. I was called to bear witness to my faith's ideals of compassion and the inherent worth and dignity of all people.

Turning Hate into an Opportunity for Love and Community

What a great way to fight hate! Earlier this year, UIC student Jason Connell used a Westboro Baptist Church protest as a way to raise money for the organizations like Human Rights Campaign, International AIDS Foundation and the Chicago-based Jerusalem Open House that are subject the group's hate-filled vitriole. Donations were named in honor of the Westboro Baptist Church and community thank you cards will be sent from the non-profits to WBC leader Fred Phelps. Connell called it a "lemons to lemonade" situation, but he made it far more than that - he turned an expression of hate into an opportunity for love and community!

In today's Dear Abby, Jeanne Phillips, who writes as Abigail Van Buren, answers a question from a reader who just had a baby and is thinking ahead to finding a religious home for the purposes of "community, moral messages and the music." But, notes the reader, "exploration throughout my 20s made me realize that I didn't believe what was being taught. I tried hard to accept the doctrines, but truthfully, I doubt I ever will. "

Would it be dishonest, she asks Dear Abby, to start attending church again, feeling as she does?

Phillips urges the reader to find a denomination in which she'd feel most comfortable. The example she gives? Unitarian Universalism - which she succinctly and accurately describes as having no dogma or creed and supporting members "on their own spiritual paths."

Saturday, June 26, St. Petersburg will hold its annual Pride Parade, of which Unitarian Universalist churches throughout the area have always been a big part. The St. Pete Pride promenade has come a long way in its eight years of existence. It travels from 20th St. to 28th St. in the Grand Central District. The GLBT community, including allies, local politicians and businesses enjoy a fun filled day packed with food, sun, dancing and being together in community. In eight years, St. Pete Pride has managed to become the largest Pride celebration in the state of Florida, with a sponsorship package on par with the biggest Pride events in the country.

If you would like to join in the event, and would like to carpool with other Spirit of Life members, please contact Rob Serenbetz at earthscoutrob@yahoo.com and put PRIDE on the Subject line. Please let him know if you can drive, how many people you can take or if you need a ride.

Those driving on their own are asked to assemble at 9 a.m. to decorate the UU float. Participants will be parking and assembling in the parking lot at 31st Street and 3rd Avenue North (across from Georgie's Bar and Grill, behind King of Peace Church). The march begins at 10 a.m.

Paper Clips is a documentary film about Whitwell Middle School, in rural Tennessee, and its efforts to help students grasp the magnitude of the Holocaust by encouraging them to collect six-million paper clips to better understand the extent of death and suffering. The film details how the students met Holocaust survivors from around the world and how the experience transformed them and their community. The film is rated G, suitable for all ages, and family attendance is highly encouraged.

Easter Sunday is always a time of warmth and celebration, at Spirit of Life UU. At 9am, we kick off the morning with our annual Easter festivities - egg rolls and tosses, and a traditional Easter Egg Hunt with a Social Justice twist, as we send our youngest out into our lovely grounds, now fresh with spring time flowers, looking for the dozens of canned goods our older students have placed around the property for them to find. The canned goods they find will all go to Metropolitan Ministries, towards their STOP Hometown Hunger program. Our Easter Canned Goods Hunt is a fun way for our youngest to participate, and to make Easter a celebration of giving during a traditional time of renewal and rebirth.

At 10am, Adult Discussion will take a more mature look at Easter, exploring together "What Easter Means to You".

Our Sunday service, led by Rev. Alec Craig, is titled "Surrounded by New Life." "With no pun intended", say Rev. Craig, " you never know what you will find when you turn over a stone. "

Spirit of Life Seder – Saturday, April 3rd at 5 p.m.

Spirit of Life annually hosts signficant Judeo-Christian events and ceremonies. One of our most beloved ceremonies is our Seder, organized by Jewish members who want to share this important remembrance with others. Spirit of Life UUs Seder will be held on Saturday, April 3 at 5 p.m. There is a $10 donation for food expenses for adults, $5 for children ages 5-12 and children under 5 are free.

Passover, or Pesach, celebrates the exodus of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. “Seder" means order and there is a specific order in which the Passover story is told. The recitation of this story is passed down from generation to generation .

Four questions are asked during the seder:

Why is this night different from all other nights?

On all other nights we eat either leavened bread or matzah. Why do we eat only matzah tonight?

On all other nights we eat all kinds of herbs. Why do we eat only bitter herbs tonight?

On all other nights we do not dip our greens even once. Why do we dip our greens twice tonight?

Social Action Sunday, March 28 - A Day of Caring and Sharing

This coming Sunday, March 28, promises to be a fun and socially active one! Palm Sunday provides a great opportunity to share peace and show compassion during Social Action Sunday at Spirit of Life UU.

Service attendees are encouraged to wear a baseball cap to church, to be donated to ASAP Homeless Services in St. Petersburg, which collects the hats for the homeless, as part of our 11 a.m. service exploring ways we can be better stewards of our community and of one another.

After the service, everyone is invited to join us at the corner of Burrell and Tarpon Springs Road for our 4th Sunday 6th Principle Project Peace Vigil. You're invited to bring your own sign of peace and caring, or to use one of ours.

Enroute to and from our Peace Vigil, along Burrell Road, we'll be conducting our quarterly Adopt-a-Spot road clean-up as part of the Great American Clean-Up.

Sunday Service for March 21: Finding your Ministry

Long time Spirit of Life UU members, Tobi Weisbond and Terri Willingham, will lead a lay service inspired by Peter Morales’s December article in the UU World, titled "What Moves You?" Together, we will explore the idea that we are all ministers of our faith, that ours is a living, active faith we can take with us wherever we go. Join us to see how you can live intentionally, and meaningfully in your world!

This is also our Share the Plate Sunday, where we donate a portion of our offerings to a different charity or social action effort each month. This month's Share the Plate recepient is the UU Legislative Ministry of Florida, which marks March 21st at "Impact Sunday" to help raise funds for the UULMF Homeless Legislative Day, in support of the Florida Coalition for the Homeless.

The Keystone Book Discussion Club will also meet at Spirit of Life UU after services, at 12:15pm.

Celebrating the Spirit of Spirit of Life

Yesterday, at our annual canvass kick-off, Spirit of Life members and visitors celebrated all the great things there are to celebrate about our little Unitarian Universalist church in Odessa, from our thriving youth programs, to our active and growing social action outreach, to our warm and loving congregational life that includes Circle Suppers, a book club, a sewing club, and cultural and religious events that honor the relgious and ethnic diversity from which we all hail.

It's an exciting time to be Unitarian Universalist in America, and Spirit of Life UU is joyful to be part of it all!

New Port Richey Library and Code Green Community screen Fighting Goliath: The Texas Coal Wars, March 13

If you missed Spirit of Life UU's showing of Fighting Goliath: The Texas Coal Wars, in January,covered by WMNF, the New Port Richey Library , in cooperation with Code Green Community, is showing the film on Sat, Mar. 13 from 1-3:30PM. , with a discussion following.

Fighting Goliath is a thought provoking film that documents how communities around Texas successfully worked together in the service of environmental justice to oppose construction of 19 coal-fired plants being fast-tracked by the Governor in East and Central Texas. It's worth watching!

As part of our continuing Social Action film series, Spirit of Life Unitarian Universalists hosts a free screening of the film, “The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil”, on Wednesday, March 17, at 7 p.m.

“The Power of Community” documents Cuba’s emergency transition to local organic agriculture, renewable energy, and large-scale mass transit following the Soviet collapse in 1990, which halted massive subsidies of imported oil and food to Cuba. The documentary film gives voice to ordinary Cubans talking about the immediate hardships they faced as their GDP dropped by more than one third, transportation nearly stopped and food became scarce. The average Cuban lost 20 pounds during the first years of this economic crisis. But rather than focusing on hardships, the film celebrates the power of community.

Cuba’s experience provides a living model for how the rest of the world can respond to the coming world oil production peak and irreversible decline some oil experts say will occur this decade.

“Everyone who is concerned about Peak Oil needs to see this film,” said Richard Heinberg, author of “The Party’s Over” and “Powerdown”. “It is a story not just of individual achievement, but of the collective mobilization of an entire society to meet an enormous challenge.”
